The novel begins in St. Petersburg in 1805. We meet the Rostov family, a warm but financially unstable noble household, and the Bolkonskys, a proud and disciplined family. Pierre Bezukhov, the awkward illegitimate son of a wealthy count, also appears—he is socially clumsy but intelligent and searching for meaning.
Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, tired of society’s emptiness, leaves his pregnant wife to join the army as war breaks out against Napoleon. Count Rostov’s young daughter Natasha enjoys the whirl of dances and youthful romance, dreaming of love.
War of 1805
Prince Andrei goes to war, serving under General Kutuzov. At the Battle of Austerlitz, the Russians suffer a crushing defeat against Napoleon. Andrei is gravely wounded and experiences disillusionment, realizing the futility of chasing glory. He sees the vast sky above the battlefield and feels humbled, sensing life is bigger than ambition.
Meanwhile, Pierre’s father dies, and Pierre unexpectedly inherits immense wealth and title. Suddenly thrust into the highest circles of Russian society, Pierre is courted by schemers. He marries the beautiful but shallow Hélène Kuragin, only to find misery in a loveless and unfaithful marriage.
Peace and Domestic Affairs
Back in Moscow, life continues with balls, family drama, and courtships. Natasha Rostov grows into a lively young woman. Her brother Nikolai serves in the army and struggles with gambling debts, while their cousin Sonya, devoted but poor, silently loves Nikolai.
Pierre searches for purpose and becomes involved with Freemasonry, hoping to find moral clarity. Though he tries to reform his estates and help peasants, he soon discovers how difficult it is to translate ideals into action.
Andrei, widowed after his wife dies in childbirth, withdraws from life. But when he later meets Natasha at a dance, he is charmed by her spirit and energy. They fall in love and become engaged, though Andrei’s stern father insists they wait a year before marriage.
Temptations and Heartbreak
During this waiting period, Natasha, restless and young, falls prey to a scheme by the reckless Anatole Kuragin, Hélène’s brother. He attempts to seduce her and elope, but the plot fails. Natasha is disgraced, her engagement to Andrei collapses, and she falls into despair.
Pierre, witnessing her suffering, feels sympathy and a stirring of love for her, though he says nothing.

The French Invasion
By 1812, Napoleon launches his great invasion of Russia. Prince Andrei returns to the army, still wounded in spirit but determined to serve. Nikolai Rostov also fights bravely. Pierre, restless and idealistic, goes to Moscow with wild plans of assassinating Napoleon, though he is no soldier.
The French advance toward Moscow, and the city is evacuated. The Rostov family flees, sacrificing their belongings to carry wounded soldiers in their wagons. Natasha, matured by hardship, shows compassion in helping them.
At the Battle of Borodino, one of the bloodiest clashes of the era, Andrei is gravely wounded. Meanwhile, Pierre wanders the battlefield, witnessing horror and chaos.
Moscow in Flames
The French occupy Moscow, only to find it nearly abandoned and soon engulfed in fire. Pierre remains behind and is arrested by the French as a suspected arsonist. In captivity, he endures hardship but also undergoes profound spiritual reflection, discovering inner peace in simple acts of kindness and shared humanity with fellow prisoners.
Andrei, near death from his wounds, is cared for by Natasha. Their love is rekindled in tender, tragic moments as he forgives her and she nurses him. Soon after, Andrei dies, leaving Natasha grief-stricken but transformed by the depth of love and loss.
The Fall of Napoleon
The tide of war turns as the Russian army and the brutal winter force Napoleon’s troops into retreat. The French suffer catastrophic losses, and the Russian people endure unspeakable suffering but emerge resilient.
Pierre, freed after the French withdrawal, returns to Moscow a changed man—more serene, humble, and clear about what matters in life.
Resolution and Peace
Years later, peace has returned. Natasha has matured from the naive girl of her youth into a devoted mother and wife. She and Pierre, long drawn to each other, finally marry and build a family together. Pierre finds happiness in domestic life, having discovered love and purpose.
Nikolai Rostov marries Princess Mary, Andrei’s sister, bringing financial stability to the Rostov family. Despite past debts and struggles, Nikolai grows into a responsible estate manager and family man. Sonya, the selfless cousin, remains unmarried, devoted to others at the cost of her own desires.
